“The Paula Deen Tour”
& Historic Savannah
1st Day: Upon arrival in Savannah, we will go to the Historic District for a unique tour - a Carriage Tour. Return to a kinder, gentler day... tour Savannah the way it was meant to be seen. Imagine moss-laden trees, beautiful antebellum homes, monuments and museums that are over 200 years old. As you take the covered carriage through America’s 1st planned city (Savannah Historic District), you will learn about the famous and infamous people and events from their rich and colorful history. From General Oglethorpe to characters and places in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” your tour will transport you through time. Evening is free for your enjoyment.
2nd Day: We’re in for a special treat today, as we take part in an exclusive “Paula Deen Tour.” Join us for a peek into the life of famous southern cooking entrepreneur, Paula Deen. Visit a few of the shops that Paula frequented, and still showcases, on her way to establishing one of the most popular restaurants in Savannah, The Lady and Sons. Get to know Paula like Savannah knows Paula and sample some of the low country’s best at Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House (owned and operated by Paula Deen). The tour includes lunch and a few surprises which are sure to give the group an appetite for more of the “Good Ole South” and Paula Deen! The tour will take guests through the Historic District and to Bethesda Boys Home, where she and Mike were married. (Note: Tour is focused on Paula Deen; however you will not actually get to see her.) The afternoon and evening are free for your enjoyment. You’ll have plenty of free time to look around the beautiful Historic District and riverfront area. (CB,L)
3rd Day: This morning we will have an Island, Beach and Fort Tour. Relax...your 18 mile marshland journey will guide you through more than 270 years of Savannah’s coastal heritage. Not just for the historian, everyone will enjoy the refreshing ocean breezes while viewing the natural beauty and coastal wildlife. We will enjoy a visit to Historic Old Fort Jackson (or Fort Pulaski) and listen to history as told by an interpreter as they guide you through a pre-Civil War Fort. Then, it’s off to historic Tybee Island, Savannah’s beach. While on Tybee, we will stop and visit the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum. This is one of a few lighthouses that you can climb to the top, if you don’t mind the 178 steps! The view is well worth it! Weather permitting, we will stop at the Tybee Island Pavilion for a stroll out onto the pier or enjoy a casual stroll on the beach. After visiting Tybee Island, we will go to the Lady & Sons (owned and operated by Paula Deen) in the Old City Market for a delicious and mouth-watering southern buffet. After lunch we will head for home. Arriving back approximately 8:00 PM.
